Digital SLR Camera Facts.

Digital SLR cameras are a great choice for professional photographers and anyone with more than a slight interest in photography. They offer excellent quality and adaptability and are very affordable.

They store pictures electronically rather then using a film with chemicals. JPL developed the first digital camera in 1961. It was used to help astronauts to navigate. A solid-state version was first prototyped in 1975. Digital cameras are now more common worldwide than those using a film as they are cheaper, easier and quicker to use.

SLR stands for the words “Single Lens Reflex” which means that both the viewfinder and the photo itself are taken through the same lens. In practice this means that a range of different lenses can be easily interchanged on the same camera body offering superb adaptability. Also it means that what the user sees through the viewfinder is very close to the photo which gets taken by the camera.

After world war two film SLR’s became popular as advances in technology were rapidly leading to new models being offered. Most of the digital cameras used today are of the “instant” or “point and shot” variety .D-SLR’s have lots of big advantages over their film counterparts and the single disadvantage of lower resolution does not matter at all to most users.

The Nikon D1 was the first D-SLR released by a major company and was just under $6000. This is expensive compared to today’s models but affordable for professionals and really dedicated consumers. One huge selling point was that it used the F-mount lens system that previous Nikon cameras used, so many photographers could continue to use their collection of Nikon lenses.

Making the choice of which D-SLR to buy can be even more complex than choosing a film version as there are even more features and options to choose from. On the other hand the wide range of choices is a good thing. Unfortunately there is much mis-information on the subject. Anyone that tells you that there is one “best” D-SLR should be ignored as such an approach is fundamentally flawed.

Digital SLR cameras are a wonderful and affordable resource for anyone with a significant interest in photography today.
