Wrestling Singlet

A wrestling singlet (or simply singlet) is a one-piece, tight-fitting, colored uniform, usually made of spandex, lycra, or nylon, used in amateur wrestling. The uniform is tight fitting so as not to get grasped accidentally by one’s opponent, and allows the referee to see each wrestler’s body clearly when awarding points or a pin. Unlike judo, it is illegal to grasp an opponent’s clothing in all styles of amateur wrestling.

To designate a competitor’s color for scoring purposes a red or green anklet is also worn.

Outside school competition (e.g., in international wrestling: freestyle and Greco-Roman) wrestlers bring a red and a blue singlet (or reversible singlet) and are told before the match which color to wear.

Singlets are also common among professional wrestlers. Many of these are much more stylized than those worn by amateurs, although the use of singlets in professional wrestling has declined in the last two decades.

South Park: W.T.F. Wrestling Takedown Federation

South Park is continuing its run of great new episodes for the second part of season 13 with a show titled W.T.F. which stands for Wrestling Takedown Federation and follows the boys as they take a run at becoming professional wrestlers. The show begins with the boys enjoying a WWE show in Denver and they not only fall in love with it, but also decide that’s what their future holds. They decide to join the school wrestling team the next day but quickly learn that professional wrestling and school wrestling are two very different things. The wrestling coach is accused of being a child molester as he tries to show them legitimate wrestling positions and the boys quickly take off, leaving the poor coach angry that people think the WWE is real.

The boys setup a backyard ring at one of their houses and have a script they wrote which like professional wrestling, has very little to do with moves and a whole lot to do with drama. They each have their stage names and begin to work out scenarios in the ring involving infidelity, murder, an 8 year old Vietnam vet and Cartman dressed as a girl and relating a tale of being addicted to abortions. The towns people start to gather around and are stunned at the revelations, becoming hooked on the supposed real life drama going on with these kids. Word of mouth starts attracting more and more fans. There are folding chairs scattered around the ring and they are quickly filling up as the afternoon show wears on.

2010: A Wrestling Odyssey! -The Apocalypse Wrestling Federation Returns to Whitby, Ontario, CANADA

Jan 23, 2010 – Apocalypse Wrestling Federation champion DON PAYSAN’S reign at the top of the AWF mountain may come to an abrupt halt on Sunday April 25 as the champion delves into the unknown as part of the AWF’s first card of 2010 at the AWF Action Centre in Whitby, Ontario.

The Apocalypse Wrestling Federation has just announced that part of their April 25th “2010: A Wrestling Odyssey” show will be comprised of a single afternoon, elimination style tournament with the winner of that afternoon’s tournament receiving an immediate title shot against the champion.

Professional wrestlers continent-wide hoped to get an invitation to wrestle in this event but, alas, only 8 were choosen to compete so that the Apocalypse Wrestling Federation can present other, non-tournament matches, as part and parcel of this huge pro-wrestling card in Whitby.

The grapplers choosen to wrestle in, what is sure to become, one of Independent wrestling’s most prestigious tournaments — The AWF Class Act Invitational — will be announced in the weeks ahead on www.AWFaction.com.  And just as AWF wrestling fans will want to logon to our website to see who has been announced to compete in the tournament the competing wrestlers themselves will not know whether or not they have made the tournament listings until they have been announced on AWFaction.com!

Discussing the Business of Sumo Wrestling

Sumo Wrestling is a popular competitive contact sport in Japan where a wrestler attempts to force his opponent either out of a circular ring, called the “dohyo”, or to touch the ground inside the “dohyo” with anything other than the soles of the feet. Japan is the only country where the sport is practiced professionally because Sumo is essentially a sport of deep and ancient Japanese traditions, where there are many rituals and rules that need to be strictly followed and obeyed.

Beyond its strict traditions, Sumo Wrestling is still a sport just like American football, where professionals can make a living from. Here, we’ll take a closer look at the business of the sport, specifically how it is organized, how profits are made through events and competitions, and how much money professional sumo wrestlers are making.

Organization

Also known as the Nihon Sumo Kyokai, the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) serves as the governing body of professional sumo wrestling. The members of JSA are former wrestlers, and they are the only people allowed to train new wrestlers. Wrestlers from foreign countries are very much welcomed to compete, but all professional competitions must take place only in Japanese soil.
