The Difference Between Submission Wrestling And Other Martial Arts
Submission wrestling or grappling is a relatively new sport. Mainly based on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, your objective is to make your opponent submit using a variety of techniques such as chokes and joint locks to win the match on points.
Submission wrestling is unique because of three things. These are namely the strategies, the techniques and the training.
In terms of strategy, you have to get yourself into a position that will allow you to gain total control of your opponent. There will be moves and counter moves because your opponent will surely not give up without a fight.
As for the techniques used, it has to be pointed out that submission wrestling relies heavily on structural attacks. This means that if you want to immobilize an opponent, you attack for instance the ankle joint which as you know is connected to other parts of the body like the foot and leg. If you push further, you can break it and knowing that could very well happen, the opponent will mostly likely submit.
SCIENTIFIC WRESTLING: MASAKATSU FUNAKI: VICTORIES, DEFEATS AND CRITICS
“Fuuuuunaki Masakatsu!”
A Japanese man with a stubble, short curly hair and the v-shaped build of Superman emerges from backstage, then strides quickly down the aisle way towards the ring. Before he reaches it, the video cuts to him– his hair now shoulder-length and his face clean shaven– turning from his opponent and falling into a forward roll. In the blink of an eye, he’s upside down scissoring some opponent’s leg and twining his hands about his foot in a picture perfect toe-hold as it becomes clear the shocked opponent was not “some opponent” but mixed martial arts legend Guy Mezger. The pictures cut again to another legend falling to the grappler, and another&. And another. Jason Delucia falls. Bas Rutten& Then Frank Shamrock. The highlight video ends with a return to the older, stubble-chinned version of the warrior as he takes a bow in slow motion. The ring announcer cries out his name once again and the music fades.
The slow motion allows time to notice a hint of sadness on the grappler’s face–still handsome, but maybe a bit wan. Perhaps that’s appropriate, given that the video’s music (credit for which goes to FryeGuy) was somber and nostalgic in tone, rather than triumphal.
Welcome to the official blog for Scientific Wrestling Online!
Check back often as I will be frequently updating information about my research into Catch Wrestling and Western combatives, as well as our new instructional releases, training events, and catch wrestling tournaments!
Last weekend Scientific Wrestling flew in submission master Yoshiaki Fujiwara and legendary carnival hook wrestler Dick Cardinal for a Catch Wrestling summit here in Los Angeles. There was also the added bonus of having Mr. Ishikawa (PWFG wrestler, Pride fighter and BattleArts owner) along to help with training.
For those who may not know, Fujiwara made his name as the first graduate from the New Japan Pro Wrestling dojo, as the man who taught Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki (the founding fathers of the Pancrase MMA promotion and the men who taught submissions to Frank Shamrock), and as the best student and protege of “God of Wrestling” Karl Gotch. Dick Cardinal is an amateur wrestling champion and a legendary carnival wrestler hailing from the Pacific NorthWest and frequent workout partner of legendary wrestler Ben Sherman.

Your Wrestling Action Figure Collection
If you are a wrestling fan, then you probably enjoy collecting memorabilia that is associated with your favorite sport of superstar. Everything from t-shirts and books to trading cards are available, but perhaps the most popular is that of action figures. The reason is because these small collectibles bare the resemblance of a wrestling superstar and take up very little space in the display case. In addition, when they are first released, wrestling action figures are very inexpensive.
As the years progress, wrestling action figures can significantly increase in value. As a general rule, anything that is left in it’s original packaging is more valuable because, you guessed it, most people take them out and play with them. Action figures are very popular among children, which is why it is so often difficult to find a specific wrestling action figure in it’s original packaging. In addition, collectibles that are kept in mint/near mint condition inevitably increase in value much more than something that has visible scratches or other defects.

In every competition, the referee will decide who the winner is and who the loser is. If you want to win in submission wrestling, you have to make the other opponent submit so you will be declared the victor.
There are different styles of submission wrestling.
1. There is grappling which is the modern form of wrestling. A lot of the elements and techniques come from various disciplines such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Catch Freestyle Wrestling, Judo, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Judo and Sambo.
2. When we refer to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it is the art of taking an opponent down with a lot of emphasis on ground grappling.
3. Catch Freestyle Wrestling is a form of amateur of submission wrestling. To win, the wrestler has to pin his opponent to the mat. It is sanctioned by the Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles or FILA together with three other forms of wrestling namely Greco-Roman, grappling and Sambo.
4. With the popularity of mixed martial arts, another form of submission wrestling gaining a lot of popularity is combat submission wrestling. The only difference is that the player does not have to wear the gi which is the official attire during competition. Aside from the elements used in boxing, players use a lot of striking techniques from both Muay Thai and boxing.
Choosing Just the Right Wrestling Shoes
Wrestling is the world’s oldest sport. Evidence of wrestling can be traced all the way back to ancient Egyptian times. The first Olympic wrestling match was recorded in 708 BC. The earliest form of wrestling proved to be a violent contest between two combatants. But much of the brutality was eliminated as the Romans introduced a less violent version of the sport. Wrestling remained popular throughout the Middle Ages in countries such as England, France, and Japan.
Wrestling continued to increase in popularity as it found its way to America
by way of the early colonists. The sport was also quite popular among Native Americans. The “catch-as-catch-can” style finally developed into the modern form of collegiate wrestling today.
The first national wrestling tournament took place in New York City in 1988. The first modern day Olympic Wrestling Match was held in 1904 in Saint Louis, Missouri. The first NCAA Wrestling Championships were held in 1912 in Ames, Iowa.
